Southern Cross Hotel : ウィキペディア英語版 | Southern Cross Hotel
The Southern Cross Hotel was located at the south-west corner of Melbourne CBD, at the corner of Bourke and Exhibition streets. A 14-storey (with two lower level basement floor) hotel building opened in August, 1962 as Australia's first modern American-style International five-star hotel. It was demolished in 2003 after a failed appeal for Victorian Heritage listing. == Early history ==
The £5.25 million hotel was built on the old Eastern Market site. It was designed by Welton Becket & Associates, in partnership with Leslie M. Perrot.〔"Southern Cross Hotel", ''The Encyclopedia of Melbourne'', Cambridge University Press, Port Melbourne, 2005.〕 The hotel was funded by PAM Airlines, who had previously sent their vice president to visit Melbourne in the prospect of building this hotel. Initially the Hotel met with great success, drawing in most of the overseas tourists, but Australians did not communicate well with the International service, some who preferred to brew their own tea, rather than call up room service, which was standard in International Hotels. The Southern Cross Hotel forced the closure of several prominent hotels in Melbourne; whose owners felt could not compete. It was only until two decades later, that the Hotel went out of style, and tourists stayed elsewhere.
